History of Social Media

From the early days of oral traditions and written communication, humans have consistently evolved their interaction methods. In the contemporary era, the advent of technology has ushered in a new chapter in communication, with social media playing a pivotal role.

In the present day, social media platforms serve as a social space, enabling individuals to connect, share, and communicate on a global scale. The evolution from face-to-face to virtual conversations has been significant, and social media has become integral to daily life.

But how did social media start? In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the social media landscape witnessed the emergence of platforms like SixDegrees, LiveJournal, and Friendster.

SixDegrees, launched in 1997, introduced the concept of six degrees of connection, allowing users to list contacts and interact within a community.

In 1999, LiveJournal pioneered the self-documenting aspect of social media through personal blogs and journals, fostering engagement through comments.

Friendster, starting in 2002, supported multimedia sharing and event discovery, reaching 3 million members quickly but eventually succumbing to competition and undergoing rebranding as a gaming platform in 2011.

The rise of MySpace in 2003 marked a global phenomenon between 2005 and 2008, with features like music embedding and customizable profiles.

old myspace website

However, Facebook’s ascent led to MySpace’s decline in 2008. Other platforms like Habbo, Hi5, and Bebo also launched around this time. Still, they did not achieve the same lasting cultural impact as the dominant platforms that continue to shape the industry nearly two decades later.

Currently, there are hundreds of social media platforms globally. Major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Pinterest, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube have substantial user bases. Additionally, numerous niche platforms cater to specific interests, industries, or communities, contributing to the overall diversity of the social media landscape.

During their initial phases, social media platforms were primarily perceived as online communities tailored for younger demographics. Nevertheless, individuals across all age groups now frequently utilize these platforms for various purposes, including business interactions, socializing, dating, engaging in political discussions, and facilitating daily communication.
